Birthday Party Planning Tips, Survival Tactics and Techniques
Have you started your child’s birthday party planning yet? Let’s face it, a number of children under your sudden care can seem a little daunting. How can you be sure that you will give your child a party they will love? Here are some survival tips and tactics from parents who have come before you:
1 - Name that theme. What does your child love? Incorporate it into a great idea for your birthday party. It’s a great way to get the kids involved with a trend they are obsessed with already. Disney movie themes, adventure games, princess parties, their favorite sports or hobby, new games and more can keep kids happy and entertained for hours. From the summer pool and backyard parties to the winter ice skating trips, Dora the Explorer parties, Builder Bob or Cars themed fun, you can find a seemingly-endless list of themes that will help you keep everyone happy and laughing.
2 - Activities are a key part of your birthday party success. Some parents get so caught up in decorating, they forget or underestimate how important the games and activities will be for the kids. Plan a scavenger hunt. Go to a roller skating rink. Find out what is in your area that could keep your party entertained and busy, exhausting them with happiness. Having a great location can make your birthday party planning a breeze.
3 - How many kids should you invite? There has long been a rule among parents that you should invite the same number of young guests as the child’s age. Although it can be difficult to follow, the general guideline should be respected to give you a fighting shot at keeping things under control.
4 - Plan for the unexpected. What if it rains? What if the location has been accidentally double-booked? What if the activities end too quickly? Think ahead and you are sure to be prepared. Have extra activity ideas on hand in case you find yourself with a number of children and hours before their parents are to arrive. Call to confirm the location days before and plan indoor games and fun if your location is outdoors.
Most parents suggest planning roughly 6 weeks in advance to cover all the bases. If you wait until the last minute and send the invitations too late, you might find your child’s best friends are out of town or otherwise busy that weekend, disappointing your child. Be sure to put RSVP’s on the cards as well to get a head count beforehand!
Finally, shorter parties are okay for your birthday party planning. Don’t think you need to plan hours of activities to have a successful party, unless you have an older child. Give at least 20 minutes for the children to get settled and used to the location and 20 minutes for cake and presents to be sure you aren’t rushing everyone around. Follow these tips and your birthday party planning is sure to translate into a great party for everyone involved!
